Dr. Janine Inez, PMHNP-BC
Writer, Nurse, Therapist, Consciousness Worker
Her Story
Dr. Janine Inez is a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who graduated from Columbia University. She works with emergent adults, adults, LGBTQ+, artists, and ALANA (African-American, Latinx, Asian, and Native American) populations offering combined psychotherapy and medication management. She specializes in psychedelics and narrative therapy for nutrition, stress, spiritual exploration, and personal growth. In her spare time, she writes poetry and fiction, meditates, forest bathes, and does yoga. Prior to nursing, Dr. Inez studied writing for screen and television in California. In 2018 she finished her first novel, and in 2022, her second. In 2022, she also completed a poetry anthology. She’s been telling stories since she was eight years old, and now she is incredibly grateful that she gets to listen to them as a profession.
Her Approach
Dr. Inez’s upbringing and lived experience as a queer Black woman who is the child of Jamaican immigrants informs her deconstructive approach to mental healthcare. She has always been an advocate for social justice in her professional and academic career. She is committed to decentering the therapist and giving primary authorship to the consulting individual. She is aware of how stigmatizing and traumatic mental healthcare has been towards oppressed communities, and she attempts to undo some of that by stepping away from traditional medical model approaches. This becomes especially apparent in her work when it comes to diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication prescription. Dr. Inez believes a good therapist walks beside their client, or just a bit behind.
